What Does a 1:16 Coffee Ratio Mean?

A 1:16 ratio means one part coffee to sixteen parts water by weight. If you use 20 grams of coffee, multiply 20 by 16 to find 320 grams of water. If you begin with 480 grams of water, divide 480 by 16 to find 30 grams of coffee.

Filter Coffee: Finding Your Everyday Ratio

For V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave, general pour-over, and many automatic drip brewers, the middle of the 1:15 to 1:17 zone is a dependable first attempt. A 1:16 ratio gives 15 grams of coffee for 240 grams of water, 20 grams for 320 grams, 25 grams for 400 grams, and 30 grams for 480 grams.

Scaling a pour-over is not entirely linear. A deeper bed creates more resistance, so doubling coffee and water while keeping the same grind can extend brew time. The calculated ratio remains correct, but grind size or pouring cadence may need adjustment. For this reason, save a recipe for each common batch rather than assuming the small and large versions will behave identically.

Automatic Drip Coffee Ratio

An automatic coffee maker controls water delivery, but it still needs a dose that suits the batch and basket. Begin around 1:16. For one liter of water, that is 62.5 grams of coffee. Batch size changes bed depth. Brewing a tiny volume in a large flat basket can produce a shallow bed and fast flow. Filling a small basket to its limit can slow drainage and encourage overflow. Espresso uses a different convention from filter coffee. The ratio normally compares the dry coffee dose in the basket with the liquid espresso yield in the cup. An 18-gram dose producing 36 grams of espresso is 1:2. The brewing water delivered by the machine is not the second number because some water remains in the puck and the flow path.

Ristretto and Lungo Ratios

Ristretto and lungo are not simply smaller and larger cups made by arbitrary button timing. They alter the dose-to-yield relationship. A ristretto uses a shorter yield, often near 1:1 to 1:1.5, to produce a compact, concentrated shot. A lungo extends yield, often toward 1:3, to produce more beverage and extract further.

The same grind does not always serve all three styles. Stopping an ordinary espresso early can create a pleasant ristretto-like cup, but a dedicated recipe may need its own grind and preparation. Immersion-hybrid brewers allow unusually broad recipes. An AeroPress can make a direct-drinking cup or a strong concentrate diluted after pressing. Japanese-style iced pour-over replaces part of the hot brew water with ice in the serving vessel. The total recipe water includes both portions. If you plan 20 grams of coffee with 320 grams total water, you might place 120 grams of ice below the dripper and pour 200 grams of hot water through the coffee. The precise split depends on the brewer, ice, desired chill, and extraction.

The hot-water portion must extract enough flavor before melting into the ice. That often calls for a finer grind or a deliberate pour compared with a 320-gram hot brew. Counting 320 grams of hot water plus 120 grams of ice would unintentionally create 440 grams total water and a much weaker drink. Cold-Brew Ratio: Ready to Drink or Concentrate?

Cold-brew recipes cause confusion because “cold brew” may mean a beverage served directly or a concentrate intended for dilution. A moka pot is sized around a boiler and filter basket, so it should not be treated like an open-ended pour-over. Fill water according to the brewer’s safe design, keeping the safety valve unobstructed, and fill the basket level with coffee without tamping it as you would espresso. The resulting ratio depends on the pot size, coffee density, and safe water fill.

For repeatability, weigh the basket dose and boiler water once you identify the correct physical fill. Then save those values as your baseline. Turkish Coffee and Vietnamese Phin Ratios

Turkish coffee uses very finely ground coffee suspended in water and served without paper filtration.
